Multi-body and structural analysis of a shovel assembly

Digging in mud, sand and rock loads a shovel very differently. We worked out the joint forces first, then checked the structure against them.

The challenge

The forces in a shovel assembly depend heavily on the soil it digs. The team needed the joint forces for different soil conditions and a structural check of the assembly under those real loads.

What we did

  1. Simulated the shovel assembly as a multi-body system for muddy, sandy and rocky soil.
  2. Took the joint forces from that simulation into a structural analysis.
  3. Ran modal analysis to find the mode shapes and vibration characteristics.
  4. Identified the bottlenecks and optimised the design.

The outcome

The shovel structure was assessed against loads that reflect real digging conditions, and the bottlenecks identified led to an optimised design.
