Fluid-structure analysis of a fluid coupling

In a fluid coupling the liquid pushes on the metal. We carried the flow pressures into the structure to see what it feels.

The challenge

A fluid coupling transmits power through a moving liquid. The team needed the pressure pattern on the input impeller and output runner, and the stress that pressure creates in the coupling.

What we did

  1. Simulated the flow in the coupling and extracted the pressure pattern for three operating conditions.
  2. Applied the same pressure pattern to the coupling structure.
  3. Determined the stress in the coupling.
  4. Removed the bottlenecks and optimised the design.

The outcome

The pressure pattern and the resulting stress were established for three operating conditions, and the bottlenecks found were removed to reach an optimised design.
