Structural analysis of a vibrating compactor roller

A vibrating roller has to carry heavy loads while it shakes at working frequency. We checked how it deforms and where stress gathers.

The challenge

The drum of an asphalt compactor works under heavy static load and constant vibration. The design team needed to know how much the drum deforms, where stress builds up, and whether the design could be made better.

What we did

  1. Prepared a finite element model of the vibrating roller drum assembly.
  2. Ran structural analysis for static and dynamic loading conditions.
  3. Carried out modal analysis to find the mode shapes and vibration characteristics.
  4. Located the bottlenecks in the design and optimised them.

The outcome

Deformation and stress were quantified, the vibration behaviour of the drum was understood, and the bottlenecks found were removed to reach an optimised design.
