Ideas for better engineering decisions.

Practical perspectives on product development, simulation, digital engineering and engineering capacity.

Perspectives

Product engineering

Design for manufacturing starts before the drawing release

Read the perspective

Manufacturability is cheapest to fix on the screen. Once tooling, fixtures and supplier quotes exist, every change carries cost and delay.

Bring manufacturing and supplier input into the design review early. Check assembly access, tolerance stack-ups, material and process limits, and inspection methods while the geometry is still easy to change.

Record the assumptions behind each decision. When a drawing is released with its reasoning attached, downstream teams can build it the way it was intended.

Simulation

Use simulation to ask better engineering questions

Read the perspective

An analysis is only as useful as the question behind it. Before building a model, write down the decision it needs to inform and the result that would change that decision.

State loads, boundary conditions, materials and acceptance criteria explicitly, and keep them traceable. Reviewers should be able to see what was assumed, not only what was calculated.

Start simple, validate against known cases or test data where possible, then add detail only where the result is sensitive to it.

Digital engineering

From 3D model to useful asset information

Read the perspective

A digital model becomes valuable when it answers an operational question: where is this valve, what feeds this pump, how do I reach this flange for maintenance.

Begin with that question and the data needed to answer it. Capture existing geometry accurately, tie equipment to its documentation, and agree who will keep the model current.

A smaller model that stays accurate is worth more than a detailed one that drifts out of date.

Staffing

When to extend your team and when to outsource a package

Read the perspective

Staff augmentation suits work you want to direct closely: your standards, your tools, your reviews, with extra capacity inside your process.

A defined work package suits self-contained work with clear inputs and deliverables, where the supplier can manage execution.

Many teams use both. Whichever model you choose, agree how intellectual property, data access and knowledge transfer will be handled before work starts.
