Weight optimisation of a pressure vessel
Steel that does no work is cost you pay for. We found where a vessel was stronger than it needed to be, and took the weight out.

The challenge
An existing pressure vessel carried temperature, pressure, self weight and piping loads. The aim was to reduce its weight while keeping the maximum shear stress to half the yield strength of the material.
What we did
- Prepared a model and ran thermo-mechanical analysis for self weight, internal pressure, torque and piping moments.
- Ran modal analysis to find the mode shapes and vibration characteristics.
- Optimised the vessel by modifying areas with low stress and low strain energy.
- Reviewed the flange thickness and bolt strength requirements.
The outcome
The vessel was optimised by modifying areas with low stress and low strain energy, and the flange thickness was reduced to the optimum strength requirement.
