Flow analysis of an oil pump
Where does oil slow down, swirl or lose pressure inside a pump? We simulated the flow to find out, then smoothed it.

The challenge
An oil pump should deliver a smooth, uniform flow. The team wanted to see the flow, the velocity and the pressure at different pump speeds, and to find any regions of pressure collapse and turbulence.
What we did
- Prepared the flow model of the oil pump.
- Simulated the flow at various pump speeds to study flow, velocity variation and pressure across the pump.
- Identified the regions of pressure collapse and turbulence.
- Modified the design to achieve a uniform flow.
The outcome
Regions of pressure collapse and turbulence were located, and a modification gave a more uniform flow.
