The challenge
An air-cooled stationary diesel engine has to keep its fins, cylinder head and exhaust manifold within safe temperatures. The team needed to know those surface temperatures and the fan setting that cools best.
What we did
- Prepared the flow model of the engine and its cooling fan.
- Simulated the cooling with the temperature and fan speed boundary conditions, to find the temperatures of fins, cylinder head and liner.
- Repeated the simulation with various fan blade angles to find the optimum cooling.
- Mapped the exhaust temperature, heat transfer coefficients and pressure from flow to structural analysis for thermo-mechanical work.
The outcome
Surface temperatures of the fins, cylinder head and liner were determined, and the fan blade angle giving the best cooling was identified.
