Stress and vibration analysis of a centrifugal pump
A pump behaves differently at each speed and mounting. We checked stress and natural frequencies across the operating range.

The challenge
A centrifugal pump and its bearing housing must stay sound across different operating speeds and be mounted either horizontally or vertically. The customer needed stress and vibration behaviour confirmed for each case.
What we did
- Built a finite element model of the pump from the customer's 3D data.
- Applied bearing forces, pressure loads, motor weight and reaction torque as boundary conditions.
- Analysed the structure at various operating speeds, for horizontal and vertical mounting.
- Carried out vibration analysis to find the natural frequencies of the structure.
The outcome
Stress in the pump and bearing housing was established for the operating and mounting conditions, together with the natural frequencies of the structure.
